Sr. Mary Josina Martin, RSM

Sister Mary Josina Martin, 88, a Sister of Mercy and a retired teacher and community service worker, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland.Born Mary Martin in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ella (Gilfillan) Martin.  She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1943 andprofessed perpetual vows on August 16, 1949.Sister was a graduate of St. Patrick High School, Providence, class of 1943, and later earned a B.S. in Education from Catholic Teachers College, Providence.Sister Mary Josina’s first ministry was at the former St. Aloysius Home in Greenville, where she was a group supervisor, a ministry to which she returned 16 years later.  Her first teaching assignment was at St. Edward School, Providence.  She then went to St. Teresa School, Pawtucket, where she taught in elementary education.  Sister taught at St. Mary School in Newport for six years and then went to her last teaching experience at Our Lady of Mercy School in East Greenwich.  Sister’s community work spanned several decades; she ministered by teaching CCD, participating in the Friendly Visitors Program and the Alternative Elderly Living Program.  She also assisted at Mount St. Rita Health Centre and at St. Mary Academy-Bayview in Riverside.  Sister retired in 1999 and resided at St. Cecelia Convent and then Franklin Court Assisted Living in Bristol for 9 years.  In 2011, she returned to Mount St Rita where she spent her last years. In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, she leaves her brother, James Martin, and her sister, Helen Grimshaw and many nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late Thomas P. and Joseph T. Martin.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 Mount St. Rita Chapel with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister’s memory to Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Rd., Cumberland, RI  02864 or to Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Rd., Cumberland, RI  02864  will be appreciated.
