Shirley A. Elman, 86 of East Providence passed away Tuesday January 12, 2016 at home. She was the wife of the late Albert R. Elman. Born in East Providence, she was the daughter of the late John and Florence B (Stones) Fratus.
She was an assistant buyer for Shepards, a switchboard operator for Avid Corp., and a retail associate for Peerless. She is survived by one son Roger Elman of Rehoboth, one daughter Sandra Wigton and her husband Bruce of Jamestown, seven grandchildren Eric Elman of North Providence, Rachel Staab and her husband Max of Hampton, VA, Rebekah Wigton of Boston, MA, Rachel Jastrebsky and her husband Brian of Chesapeake, VA, Nathan Wigton of Baltimore, MD, Jeremy Wigton of Attleboro, MA, Jacob Wigton of Jamestown, three sisters Constance Brown of Atlantis, FL, Florence Oliver and her husband Frank of East Providence, Joan Lindsay of Warwick. She was the sister of the late John Fratus and sister-in-law of the late Jack Lindsay and Theron Brown.
Shirley was an avid gardener and spent many hours outsmarting the groundhogs and other creatures anxious to taste her delicious vegetables. She also enjoyed maintaining her home by doing all the painting, other repairs and lawn maintenance by herself. She especially loved doting on her grandchildren. She will be missed by all who ever met her.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM in the PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Calling hours will be Monday from 4-7 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
