Jose “Ramalho” Da Estrela

Jose “Ramalho” Da Estrela, 84, of East Providence, Rhode Island, passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the Espirito Santo hospital, in Sao Miguel, Azores. He was the husband of the late Maria dos Anjos (Cabral) Estrela.

Born in Rabo de Peixe, Sao Miguel, Azores he was a son of the late Manuel and Maria Da Conceicao Estrela. He was survived by his four children, Adelina Estrela and her husband Manuel of East Providence, Maria Cordeiro and her husband Serafim of Providence, Manuela Andrade and her husband Artur of East Providence and his son Jose Nazario Estrela and his wife Cidalia of Swansea. He was the proud father of the popular music artist, Jose Nazario. He was the devoted grandfather of ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Domingos, Eduardo, Maria da Conceicao, Manuel “Jaral” and Luisa.

Jose was dedicated to his career, and was a fisherman for most of his life. He was an extremely hard-working man. During his career, he would travel to Alaska on the fishing vessels for six months at a time. One of his greatest accomplishments was owning his bar/store in Sao Miguel, where many loved to visit. Jose was very proud of where he came from and his life in Portugal brought him great joy.

His funeral and visitation will be held on Friday, December 18, 2020 from 9:00AM to 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence, RI with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 AM. Burial will be private.

RIP Sr Jose Estrela (Tio Ramalho🙏As we all know you loved our Rabo De Peixe!But I also know you loved USA because everytime there was a festa or procession in our village you were always with your American Tie and I always said to my self! My deepest condolences to the family. Mister Estrela was a very honour man well-known in our Village of Rabo de Peixe everybody knew him by the nickname, ( Ramalho ) I talked to him in person last year in October wen we had a conversation he always used to talk about my parents and my brother who was also a fisherman in the Cod industry whid him late 60 and 70 unfortunately my brother was one that never came back. We lived in the same street back home and he always had a smile in his face while holding a wooden toothpick in his mouth.My father was also a cod fisherman and they worked in that industry for many years.Good family man who loved his hometown.
