John H. Rollins

John H. Rollins, 77, of Ohio Avenue passed away Friday May 8, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Julia M. (Fortes) Rollins Born in Providence he was a son of the late James A. and Rachel J. (Clark) Rollins, Sr. Mr. Rollins was an MBE/WBE Coordinator for the City of Providence before retiring. He was a City Councilman. He graduated from La Salle Academy in 1957. He attended the University of Rhode Island leaving early to try out with the Green Bay Packers in 1961 and in 1964 tried out for the New York Giants. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic Hall of Fame, University of Rhode Island Hall of Fame, La Salle Academy Hall of Fame and into the Providence Gridiron Hall of Fame. John played for the Providence Steam Rollers and was a freshman football coach for Brown University. Besides his wife he leaves five daughters, Cheryl Watkins and her husband Michael, Lisa Ann Rollins, Johnna Marie Rollins, Tracey Rollins Spann and her husband Christopher and Dina Lee Rollins, three sisters, Mary McClain, Ella Robinson and Helen Gomes, one brother, Clarence Rollins, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James A. Rollins, Jr., Robert L. Rollins, Joseph L. Rollins, Melvina Washington, Susan Briggs, Grace Pierce, Ester Rollins and Pauline Scott. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 8:45 from the PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Saint Michael’s Church, Oxford Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Calling hours Tuesday 4-8. In lieu of flowers contributions to La Salle Academy/John H. Rollins Scholarship Fund, 612 Academy Avenue, Providence, RI 02908.
