Dr. Shaun P. Murphy

Dr. Shaun P. Murphy, 36, of Tallahassee, Florida passed away on Monday, October 19, 2015. Born in Providence, he was a son of Richard F. and Helen M. (Cyr) Murphy of Riverside.   Shaun was a Senior Project Manager and also worked in the Postdoctoral Research Department of Biological Science at  Florida State University.  Previously he was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar, UC Davis, was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar & Graduate Research Assistant at Florida State University and was an Adjunct Instructor & Graduate Research Assistant for the Department of Biology at Rhode Island College. He received Fellowships & Funding from the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association, received awards from the Robert M. Young Memorial Research and the American Heart Association and belonged to The Genetics Society of America. Shaun was a published author in well- known Molecular Biophysics Journals and was also a Keynote & Guest Lecturer at various educational seminars throughout the country.  He studied under his longtime colleague and mentor, Dr. Lloyd Matsumoto of Rhode Island College.  He was a 1996 graduate of LaSalle Academy, received his Master’s Degree from Rhode Island College and his Ph. D. from Florida State University. Besides his parents he leaves two brothers, Richard P. Murphy and Brian S. Murphy, one niece, Lauren E. Murphy, one nephew, Ryan T. Murphy, his paternal grandmother, Joan M. Murphy, his maternal grandmother, Jane H. Cyr and several aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was the grandson of the late Richard J. Murphy and Paul O. Cyr. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:00 AM from the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Brendan’s Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Calling hours Friday 5-8. In lieu of flowers contributions to: RI College, c/o Department of Biology, 600 Mt.
