Derin Miguel Araujo

Derin Miguel Araujo, 35, of Providence, died unexpectedly on July 4. He was the son of Rhonda Araujo Smith and Anthony Kevin Smith of Providence and Jose Luis Leon of the Dominican Republic.

Having accepted Jesus Christ, Derin led a compassionate, caring life. He was known for his love for his family, friends, and coworkers. He was a gentle giant with a smile as big as his compassionate heart.

At a young age, Derin loved baseball and football; and he played football in his freshman year in high school, graduating from Classical High School in 2002.

He was a security officer for U.S. Security Associates, Inc. assigned to Teknor Apex in Pawtucket, where he loved his job and his work family.

Derin was an avid music lover, of all genres, who played the accordion and piano. He was also a passionate video gamer and Street Fighter enthusiast with an affection for Anime and a devoted member of the Rhode Island Common Grounds Gamers community.

In addition to his parents, Derin is survived by his siblings Anthony Smith, Jr., Kristin Smith, and Stephanie Alvarez of Providence, and Ardelys Leon Martinez, Arlyn Leon Martinez, and Analy Leon Martinez of the Dominican Republic; his maternal grandmother Judith Araujo and grandfather the late Arthur Araujo of Providence; and paternal grandparents Yolanda Urena and Isreal Leon of the Dominican Republic. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, a goddaughter, and a great number of friends, all who will remember his loving, kind, gentle spirit forever.

His funeral will be held on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Mount Hope Community Baptist Church, 734 Hope Street, Providence. Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2019, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mount Hope Community Baptist Church. Floral arrangements may be sent to Perry-McStay Funeral Home or memorial donations to the American Heart Association.
