Charles Norman Hirst, 59, a life-long resident of East Providence, died on Wednesday May 27, 2015 after a courageous nine month struggle with cancer.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Nancy Knight Hirst and the late Walter Edward Hirst. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Andrea Soares Hirst.
A 1974 graduate of East Providence High School, Charlie received a B.S. in Business from URI in 1979. He was employed by the East Providence School Department Maintenance and Facilities Division for 17 years, and was the current treasurer of Local 2969 AFSCME. Charlie was an active member of the Cape Verdean Progressive Center, formerly serving on its Board of Trustees and as president of its Five-oh (50) Club.
Charlie is survived by his sister Susan Hirst Read and her husband, Reg, of Arkansas and sister Martha K. Hirst of New York City, sisters-in-law Cheryl Gomes and Marcella Christie of East Providence; nineteen nieces and nephews and a host of wonderful friends.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 4-7 PM at PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial will be private.
