Antonio P. Varela

Antonio P. Varela, 90, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Hirondina C. (Lopes) Varela.

He was born in Brava, Cape Verde Islands, a son of the late Francisco P. and Olivia dos Santos (Alves) Varela.  Mr. Varela worked for the Rawcliff Corporation before he retired.  Before coming to the United States, he was the owner and C.E.O. of A.P. Varela Enterprise in Senegal. He was one with fondness of animals as well as a philanthropist.  Mr. Varela will always be remembered as someone who was always there for others and was dependable. He dedicated his life to helping those in need and made it his passion to watch others achieve all their dreams and aspirations.

Besides his wife, he leaves five children, Rose Marie Varela, Marie Antoinette DaRosa, Odile Miranda, Olivier Varela and Francois Varela, his grandchildren, Natacha Varela, Sabrina DaRosa, Katie DaRosa, Noah Varela and several great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Jose P. Varela.

  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 5, 2020 at 10:00 AM in St. Martha’s Church, 2595 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2020 from 3-6 PM in the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence.  The guidelines set forth by the Rhode Island Department of Health will be observed. Face coverings are required and only fifteen people will be allowed in the funeral home at a time.
