Thomas Braxton of East Providence, Rhode Island, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 25. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Hall) Braxton and son of the late Carter and Mary (Cuff) Braxton, grandson of the late Clara Johnson.He is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Gomes and Sandra Meekins, and two sons, Thomas Braxton, Jr. and Douglas Braxton; eight grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. He also leaves sisters-in-law Emeline Batey, Hope Braxton, and Velma Braxton.Tom was predeceased by his sisters Clara McCauley, Martha Haskins, and Lillian Garcia; and brothers Carter Braxton and John Braxton.He was previously employed for over 40 years at School House Candy. After “retiring” he was employed at Thyssen-Krupp Elevator Company, First Student Transportation, and Roosevelt International Academy.He was an avid golfer, former secretary and treasurer of the East Providence Handicappers Golf Association, and was a member of the Bi-Ky-Pu Golf Association. Thomas bowled and served as an officer in numerous bowling leagues, was the oldest living member of his church, the Greater Hood Shaw Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, serving as a trustee and pastor’s steward for a number of pastors. He was known for his quick wit and love of laughter. Anyone who knew him loved him.Visiting hours will be at the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, RI, Thursday, April 30, 5 – 8 p.m. Funeral services on Friday, May 1, 10 a.m., at the Greater Hood Shaw Memorial A.M.E.Zion Church, 148 Wadsworth Street, Providence, RI. Burial will be at Swan Point Cemetery.
