Robert P. “Bob” Blessing, 79, of Rumford, passed away January 11, 2017, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Ruthanne (Carlson) Blessing. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late George and Viola (Sutcliffe) Blessing. He was the proud father of six children. Besides his wife, he is survived by their two children; Robert P. Blessing, Jr. (Katharine), and Daniel J. Blessing (Amanda); and by his four children from his previous marriage to Berenice Hackett Davis; Michael P. Blessing (Deborah), Mary Beth Blessing (Brian Lees), Christine F. Blessing, and David P. Blessing (Nancy). Additional survivors include his brother Stephen T. Blessing, his grandchildren Michael, Ava, Abby, Ben, Riley and Graham, his mother-in-law Dorothy “Toppy” Carlson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his brothers George and John “Jack” Blessing. A passionate reader and student, Bob was a graduate of LaSalle Academy (1954) and Providence College (1958). He received his MBA from the University of Rhode Island (1969) and completed various other post-graduate studies. Bob began his career as a math and science teacher and basketball coach at Classical High School. He later became the manager of the Mt. Pleasant branch of Citizens Bank where he served as a Vice President for several years. Bob then worked for the Cormack-Routhier Agency before co-founding the Goodrich-Blessing Agency with his friend and business partner Donald Goodrich. Bob retired in 1994. A “Golden Friar”, Bob was an active PC alum and Friar Fanatic. A season ticket holder since 1972, he often traveled with the team to cheer on his Friars all over the country. A long-time member of Wannamoisett Country Club, Bob was an avid golfer and card player and enjoyed competition in any form. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, often at his favorite restaurant, Twin Oaks. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Saturday January 14th at 10 AM in St. Margaret’s Church 1098 Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford.
