Richard J. Murphy, 88 died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday July, 27 2014 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. He was the loving husband of Joan (Heap) Murphy for 67 years.He was born in the Fox Point section of Providence a son of the late Richard and Ellen (Cullinane) Murphy. Richard worked for Narragansett Electric Company as a substation operator for 43 years. He served as a gunner for the U.S Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion for 65 years. He was always known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Besides his wife he leaves one daughter Patsy Hawksley and her husband Wayne of Matunuck, one son Richard Murphy and his wife Helen of Riverside, six grandchildren Richard, Brian and Shaun Murphy, Brandon, Molly and Luke Hawksley and two great grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Murphy. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM from the PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in Saint Martha’s Church Pawtucket Avenue. Burial will be in Saint Francis Cemetery. Calling hours Wednesday 6-8.
