Manuel Humberto Lacerda Machado “Manny”, 73, of Riverside, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Rhode Island Hospital of a heart condition.
Manny was born on August 24, 1946 in Cedros, Faial, Azores to a large Catholic family, and came to the U.S. in 1948. He was the son of the late Joseph Lacerda and Maria (Andrade) Machado, and the youngest of seven siblings. Manny grew up in Seekonk, MA. On October 12, 1968, he married Diane Margaret Cary of Riverside, and they raised two children, Matthew and Sarah in their homes in Riverside and Scituate. Manny was a journeyman toolmaker and tool designer. He worked for Sabre Products for 24 years. He spent the next 27 years at Antaya Technologies, Inc., where he was one of the original employees, obtaining over 30 patents for various designs.
With his good-natured optimism, Manny lifted the spirits of all with his smile and big heart. Down to earth and unpretentious, he always rooted for the “underdogs” and those in need (except he stayed a Pats and Sox fan in recent years). Manny was an avid reader, history and science buff, as well as a fan of British mysteries, the BBC and Monty Python. He loved to hike, canoe, and walk his dog, Cracker, for miles every day. His was a gentle soul, unless he was playing cards or chess. He could fix just about anything and had a greenish thumb. Manny was the hard-working utility infielder who gave a helping hand and countless hours to family and friends on all kinds of projects – big and small.
Manny was the best-in-class as a father, a family member and a friend. A big part of his life were gatherings with family and friends. Get-togethers with the Machado and Cary Clans were a particular favorite. Manny loved visiting and vacationing with his wife, children and grandchildren. All will miss him dearly.
He is survived by Diane, his loving wife of 51 years, his son Matthew and daughter-in-law, Robin Cooley, of Louisville, Colorado, and his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Matthew Simeone of South Kingston, RI; and the light of his life, his six grandchildren: Victor, Gabriel, Meadow and Neve Machado, and Luca and Nicholas Simeone. His surviving siblings are: Maria Mathias (Seekonk, MA), Joseph Machado (Seekonk, MA), Evelyn Fillo (Riverside, RI), Lucia Lusignan (East Providence, RI), and Cristina Bolton (San Marcos, CA). Manny was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Connie Bienvenue.
Due to the pandemic, a virtual service, by Manny’s nephew, the Reverend Gregory Mathias, will be held on April 15, 2020, at 11 a.m. A link to view a live stream of the service is provided below. At a later date, the family looks forward to seeing relatives and friends, in person, to celebrate Manny’s life. Donations to Children’s Friend and Service of Rhode Island, 152 Summer St, Providence, RI 02903 (website: cfsri.org) would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
