Joseph J. “Cute” Magsamen, 90, formerly of Dover Avenue, East Providence, passed away Saturday April 28, 2018 at the Hope Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Providence. He was the husband of the late Shirley J. (Orvis) Magsamen. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Julius and Catherine (Cute) Magsamen. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII and a Marine Veteran of the Korean War. He served in the US Navy as a Pharmacist Mate and also an S.A. member of the 2nd Marine Division FMF. He was a 1950 graduate of Brown University. Mr. Magsamen started his Insurance Company in 1953. He founded New England Insurance Association in 1958 and Surplus Lines, Inc. in 1978. He was a college instructor in Insurance and also was a law student in later life. Joe was a communicant of Saint Margaret’s Church from the late 40’s and was a Eucharistic Minister. He was an avid golfer, having played in many tournaments on the East Coast with his good friends Perry Como and Harry Pezzullo. He was a member of Wannamoisett Country Club for 32 years and previously a member of the Pawtucket Country Club and JDM Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. He was a loyal Red Sox fan from the late 30’s until his passing. His love for animals was legendary. He leaves one niece, Catherine McEnney of Rumford. He was the brother of the late Catherine Terwilliger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday May 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM in Saint Margaret’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford. Burial with Military Honors will be in Mount Saint Mary’s Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite animal shelter in memory of Joseph Magsamen. Calling hours respectfully omitted.
