José Ponte, 88, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was the loving and devoted husband to Idalina (Bolarinho) Ponte to whom he was married for 62 years.
Born in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel, Azores, he was a son of the late José and Beatriz (Vieira) Ponte Bicho.
Mr. Ponte was a fisherman in the summer months and a carpenter/ Mason in the winter months while living in Portugal. In 1976 he came to the United States where he worked for the Malina Company before their closing. He continued working as a machine operator for Rhode Island Tool Company before retiring at the age of 65. He enjoyed cooking, and he believed his culinary skills were second to none. He was a life long soccer fan. His love for his team, “Sporting” led to many family discussions with the Benfica fans…. Dad was known for being the life of the party and will be missed by his family and friends.
Besides his wife he leaves three daughters, Maria Adriana deFontes and her husband Manuel of Seekonk, Ana Calandrelli and her husband Joseph of West Warwick and Maria Barcelos and her husband John of Bristol, seven grandchildren, Jason deFontes, Tina Marie Vezina, Derek and Christopher Calandrelli, Britny Gutierrez, Kollen and Candace Barcelos, eight great grandchildren, Mikayla deFontes, Ella and James Calandrelli, Chase and Lila Gutierrez, Maddox Barcelos, Dylan Vezina and coming in September, Baby Gutierrez, two brothers, Arthur Bicho of Providence and Carlos Ponte of Canada and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late, Idalina Ponte and brother of the late Antonio DaPonte and Armando Bicho.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence. Burial will be private. Calling hours respectfully omitted.
