John F. Avritch, 87 of Barrington, and formerly of Riverside passed away on December 20, 2017 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center. Born in North Dakota, he was a son of the late John and Diane G. (Durst) Avritch. He was a graduate of East Providence High School, and served in the Army during the Korean War. After serving in the military John went to work in Washington D.C. for the Navy as a contract negotiator, and also worked part-time in D.C. as an armed guard assisted by trusted police dog, a German Shepard named Barron. After his retirement he returned and lived in Riverside. John is survived by his brother Richard T. Avritch and his wife Dory, four nephews, Peter, Bruce, Steven, and Matthew. He was the brother of the late Rhoda Wrobleski. A committal service with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the RI Veterans Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter at 1:30 PM. Anyone attending the service is asked to meet in front of the office at the cemetery at 1:15 PM.
