Joan C. Bentley Coleman, 68, passed away peacefully on March 24 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She leaves behind her loving husband of 25 years, Leonard Coleman. She was the daughter of the late George C. and Claire (Blackledge) Bentley.
Joan was raised in East Providence, RI and graduated from East Providence High School. She attended the Community College of Rhode Island, where she was a recipient of a Ford Foundation Scholarship for her academic achievement. She also attended the University of Rhode Island. She worked for many years at URI as an administrative assistant in African-American Studies and also in the department of Women’s Studies.
Besides her husband she is survived by her sisters, Denise McGeough and her husband Domenic, Dale Bentley Taylor and her husband Elmer, her brother Michael C. Bentley and his wife Ellen, and her brothers-in-law O’Neils Coleman, and Christopher Coleman. She was predeceased by her sister Jill Rawlings.
Joan had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews Michael C. Bentley Jr., Karen Bentley, John Bentley, Oliver Acquah, Julie Ann Rawlings-Dias, James Rawlings, Nancy Gaillard, and Timothy McGeough. She was the loving great-aunt to fourteen nieces and nephews.
Everyone who knew Joan loved to be with her for her wonderful personality, her unique sense of humor, and her generous spirit. She will be missed.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a service to follow at 7:00 PM in the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial will be private.
