The oldest son of James F. Hanaway and Katherine L. Hanaway, was raised in East Providence, RI and graduated from LaSalle Academy. He received a scholarship to Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, where he was a member of the varsity swim team for four years. Upon graduation in 1955, he went into USAF pilot training and was awarded wings at Laredo AFB, TX. He was assigned to Fürstenfeldbruck AB, Germany as a T-33 instructor pilot, teaching German, Iranian and Pakistani student pilots. Later, he was re-assigned to Wiesbaden AB, Germany as an instructor for their jet qualification program. Jim continued his military involvement after active duty by joining the RI Air National Guard where he served as operations officer for the 143rd Special Operations Squadron and Commander of the 156th Tactical Air Control Center Squadron. His last assignment, and his favorite, was as a Liaison Officer for the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO. He counseled high school students on how to prepare for, formally apply to and seek a nomination to the USAF Academy. It involved working with students, parents and guidance counselors. Hanaway was one of 10 officers nationwide asked to serve on USAF Academy Admissions Officer Advisory Panel for 3 years. He retired as a colonel (‘06) with an aeronautical rating of USAF Command Pilot and 3300 flying hours. In civilian life, Hanaway joined his father at James F. Hanaway Inc, a Providence advertising agency, and in 1968 he merged the agency with Fern and Associates. The combined agencies became Fern/Hanaway, Inc. Jim and Sanford Fern, his partner and president, were together 28 years until Jim’s retirement. The agency had billings of 21 million and a fulltime staff of 35 people. Later, he joined his wife Barbara in the real estate business at Kinlin-Grover GMAC, South Yarmouth, MA. As he liked to put it, “Barbara flies lead and I fly on her wing.” He leaves his beloved wife Barbara A.(Bernier) of 57 years, a late son Timothy J. Hanaway, a daughter Dawn E. August of Barrington, RI and son Jeffrey M. Hanaway of Amherst, NH. Grandchildren include Alexandra and Olivia August, as well as Kyle and Jack Hanaway. His two brothers are Richard J. Hanaway of Holderness, NH and the late Paul J. Hanaway of Greenville, RI. Hanaway’s community service included years as a member of the Board of Trustees at LaSalle Academy and at Our Lady of Peace Retreat Center, Narragansett, RI. He also volunteered at Meals on Wheels for 9 years in South Yarmouth and 3 years in Tiverton. A private service will be held at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery for family. We invite friends and family to join us for a Celebration of Life gathering on August 11th from noon to 3pm at the Boathouse Restaurant in Tiverton, RI. This will be a time to rejoice so bring your favorite photo or a memorable story of your time with Jim to share with all.
