George R. Currier, Sr.

George R. Currier, Sr., 94, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Hope Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Providence. He was the husband of the late Grace Marie (McNeil) Currier. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Manuel and Florence (Silva) Currier. Mr. Currier was an Airforce Veteran of WWII. He was a dedicated Math teacher in the East Providence School District for 35 years. From 1951 to 1961 he taught at the old Central Junior High at Six Corners.  He moved to the East Providence High School in 1961 and retired in 1985.  George’s attendance was nearly perfect.  He did not take a sick day for over 15 years.  Recently, while sitting in a local podiatrist’s office, a former student recognized George and told him that he was the best math teacher he ever had. After he retired, he and the love of his life, Grace, were able to travel cross country together. They were also able to visit Ireland shortly before Grace’s death in 1997. George loved the sea. He spent much of his life in a modest beach cottage located in Westport, Massachusetts.  He fished, went clamming, and owned a Boston Whaler.  It was where he was most at peace.  He loved Westport and the sea. George was a former NY Giants fan who eagerly adopted the New England Patriots. Just a week ago, he watched the Pats dismantle the Dolphins, and he was looking forward to watching another Super Bowl season.  He also spent his leisure time playing, and then later watching golf.  He would always be able to report who was leading the latest tournament and by how many strokes. George was a good man. He loved and provided for his family, never failing them during a time of need. He leaves one daughter, Elizabeth Currier and her husband Paul Donahue of Little Compton, one son, George (Bob) R. Currier, Jr. and his wife Diane of Barrington, five grandchildren, Brendan and Sarah Currier, Margaret, James and Nicolas Donahue, one great grandson, Harrison Mello and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Christine Currier Collins and brother of the late Edward Currier, Dorothy Soito, Albert and Ernest Currier. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 11:00 AM in Saint Martha’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial with Military Honors will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
