George M. Loughran 74, of Barbara Lane, North Swansea, MA for the past 33 years, passed away Sunday October 28, 2012 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center after a courageous 10 year battle with lung cancer.
He was the beloved husband of Joan K. (Cox) Loughran to whom he was married 34 years.
Born in Providence he was a son of the late Richard J. and Elizabeth M. (Conner) Loughran.
Mr. Loughran was a Logistics Coordinator for the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 32 years of service. He was a Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of Hope High School and attended Brown University. He was a member of the National Association of Postal Workers-NAPS, former member of the Board of Directors of Providence Postal Credit Union, and a Nominee for the Federal Employee of the year in 1996. Mr. Loughran was an avid New England Patriots and Notre Dame Football fan.
Besides his wife he leaves four nieces, Anne Strokos and her husband John of Virginia, Doreen Vierra and her husband Robert of Exeter, Julie Weesner and her husband Kent of Rumford and Shelley Furtado and her husband Oliver of North Smithfield, four nephews, John and his wife Susan of Dartmouth MA, Donald of Pennsylvania, Michael of Florida, Charles Loughran of North Carolina and many other extended family members.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 9:00 A.M. from the PERRY/MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary of the Bay Church, Main Street, Warren. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Columba’s Cemetery, Middletown. Calling hours Thursday 5-8.
