Eugene Penniman Buker, 90, of Ferncliffe Road passed away Wednesday August 31,2016 at the Hope Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Providence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Clare Estes (Lake) Buker to whom he was married for 33 years. Born at home on October 6, 1925 on Arnold Street, Riverside, he was a son of the late Melvin Orin Buker and Lottie (Penniman) Buker. Eugene was an Army Air Corps Veteran during World War II. He was a Salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company before becoming a Security Guard for Providence College for 19 years. Prior to his position at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, he worked for his brother Harry Buker making deliveries for Cushman Bakery, for the South County and Connecticut route. Eugene was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a love for travel, cars, planes, and trains. He was an avid reader and loved history books. Eugene enjoyed so many vacations camping on Cape Cod with family at Nickerson State Park in Brewster, MA. In 1960 he took over his brothers position becoming owner of the delivery truck and making Seekonk his new route. Eugene graduated from East Providence High School in 1944. Stationed in Orlando, Florida he started flying and repairing plane engines. In 1945 he was promoted to Engineer where he worked on B-54s in Hawaii. He became flight engineer (flight test department) at Hickam Field near Pearl Harbor and also in Japan at Atusgi Airbase. He was a 1950 graduate of Edgewood Junior College in Barrington, earning his degree in marketing. In 1985 he bought his first motorcycle at the age of 60, in 1996 be purchased a 1978 Corvette and in 1986 bought a sailboat, spending time with his brother Harry sailing around the bay. Eugene took a sailing adventure on the Majesty Ship Rose from Boston to New York as a crew member. Eugene joined Seekonk Congregational Church in 1995 and was involved in the mission trips to New Orleans and Haiti. In 1996, Eugene bought a ’78 Corvette and was recognized by all as he drove distinctly in and around town. He was also a member of the German Club in Warren, RI. He leaves two daughters, Leslie L. Cote and her husband Dr. A. Richard of Barrington and Kristin E. Putney and her husband Robert of Seekonk, two sons, Matthew P. Buker and his wife Patricia of Fall River, MA and Douglas L. Buker and his wife Anne of Acushnet, MA, fifteen grandchildren and one great grandson. He was the grandfather of the late Mitchell R. Putney. He was predeceased by seven siblings. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:00 AM from the PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a burial to follow at 10:00 AM in Seekonk Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM in Seekonk Congregational Church, Fall River Avenue, Seekonk. Calling hours tomorrow September 2, 2016, from 4-8.
