Erica Rose Langlais

On Thursday, May 28, 2020, Erica Rose Langlais, loving daughter to Helena M. Fernandes Chmielinski and Edward R. Langlais, passed away at the age of 25. Erica was born on October 21, 1994 in Providence, and grew up in Hope, RI with her sister Brittany M. Langlais and brother Scott E. Langlais. Erica graduated from Scituate High School and the University of Rhode Island. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Plant Sciences, and was continuing her education at Northern Michigan University to pursue a degree in Medicinal Plant Chemistry.

Besides her parents and siblings Erica was survived by her niece Naomi Elena Matos, her paternal grandparents, Arthur R. Langlais and Doris Langlais, maternal grandparents, Maria F. Fernandes, and Jose T. Fernandes. Step-parents Wade Chmielinski, and Kathleen McCarthy. Step brother and sister, Wade Chmielinski, Jr, and Leila Chmielinski. Paternal aunts and uncles, Diane and Gerard Quintanar, Sandra and Mark Kister, and Gerard and Josephine Langlais. Maternal uncle and aunt, Antonio and Beatriz Fernandes. Erica will be missed by her cousins Monica Dias, Nico Fernandes, Marie and Marc Quintanar and Joseph Langlais, as well as her large extended family and many many friends. Erica was extraordinary, she loved fully, and reminded us every day of how much she loved us.

Erica had a casual demeanor, was sensitive, empathetic, free-spirited, and wore her heart on her sleeve. She had many passions, including an eclectic taste in music, gardening, comedy (Robin Williams and Kristin Wiig), and cooking. She loved tie dye and flip flops, her cat Nova, her sister’s dog Stassi and her brother’s dog Rocky, the beach, sunsets, the power and beauty of the sky, snowboarding, and especially spending time with family and friends and eating good food.

Erica touched everyone she met, and made time for everyone in her life. She never hesitated to help those in need. She was known for her never ending smile, free spirit, kindness to all including strangers, and for having a compassionate heart. Her family and friends will tell you she was the strongest person they have ever met, with a gentle soul and a big heart.

She did everything with intensity. Erica loved life, loved deeply, laughed loudly, and lived life fully, out loud and in color. She touched everyone she met, and will be remembered by all that knew her as the life of the room, the smile that never ended, and the friend that was always there for you. Erica only had love in her heart for people, and was accepting of everyone. She will never be forgotten, and we will miss her and honor her every day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse St., Providence, RI 02903. Burial will be private. We will honor her life together.

Because of her love for animals, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA,com) and dedicate your donation in memory of Erica Rose Langlais.

Dear Ed and family, My heart is breaking from hearing about this tragic and sad loss of your beloved daughter Erica Rose. I remember always Welcoming the beauty and gentleness of Erica’s smile when she would run up to my house whenever she could catch me outside to sneak a peek at my puppies, and joyfully talk to me with the cutest, bright blue eyes, and inquisitive questioning. Erica”s ultimate goal was to talk to me and learn about the Adorable puppies I had been raising. I remember Erica Rose being so sweet and friendly always, and in my own eyes, I had viewed her as a remarkable, beautiful little girl. It was at that moment I wistfully thought about what it would be like to have a daughter like that of my own. I am truly saddened as I write this memory, and my heart is breaking with knowing that Erica Rose’s life was cut all too short and taken from this world as we know it. I hope that you can find a sense of comfort knowing that friends near and far are thinking of you at this time and remembering too what a beautiful young woman you raised. May this fond memory I am sharing with you here live on forever in your heart as well as my own. May God bless you and keep your loving daughter in His arms always.
