Edward Duggan Long “Ungie”, a lifelong Rumford resident succumbed on Saturday January 9, 2016 at the home of his son Kyle and his wife Marianne after a 3 year battle with an aggressive form of squamous cell cancer. He was the beloved husband of 55 years of Pat (Bowen) Long. Born in East Providence he was the son of the late Edward and Beatrice (Donnelly) Long.
Edward was a Guidance Counselor for Coventry High School retiring in 1990. He was a 1949 graduate of East Providence High School where he was all state in baseball and was invited to try out with the Boston Braves. He was a 1954 graduate of Boston College with a degree in Business Management. In 1959 he received his teaching certificate in Social Studies from URI, and Received his Masters of Education from Providence College. He was also a Korean War Army Veteran, he served in the East Providence Fire Department during the mid 1950’s. He was an avid golfer and a member of Riverside American Legion Post 10.
Ed was a dignified gentleman who was respected by everyone he came in contact with. He had a quick wit and a smile for all. He was a true family man who loved being with his family and close friends.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons Robert Long of Rumford, Kyle Long and his wife Marianne of Rumford, Stephen Long and his wife Elizabeth of Seekonk one daughter Michaela Long-Harnum and her husband Marc of Alaska, seven grandchildren Kyle Jr., Mark, Joshua, Hope, Halie Kyan, Kade. He was the brother of the late Grace Zeng, Laura Smith, and Betty Bechard.
His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 AM from the PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Margaret’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford. Burial with Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army.
