Donald J. “Danny” Lopes, Sr., 83 of Camp Street in Providence, Rhode Island passed away on Monday, April 8, 2019 at his home. He was the husband of Marilyn M. (Delgado) Lopes.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Joao P. and Ina M. (Rose) Lopes. Mr. Lopes was a Supervisor for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority before he retired. He also was the President of the Two Man Union at the 148 Bar & Lounge. He was a former Providence City Councilman for the 3rd ward and was a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention. He was a board member of the Providence Civic Center and a former President of the Rhode Island Seniors Association. Mr. Lopes was the founding President of S.W.A.P. and a former coach of Woodlawn Cowboys and the Easton Ma. Wildcats. He was an Army veteran.
Besides his wife he leaves four children, Lynette M. Lopes-Mitchell and her husband Marcus of Providence, Chris D. Lopes and his wife Maria of Easton, Donald J. Lopes, Jr. and his wife Lavonne of Cranston and Marissa L. Lopes of Providence, three sisters,Virginia Lopes, Lorraine Adams and Mary Pena, twelve grandchildren, Ronald (papa’s Daddio) Machado, Chris (papa’s CJism) Lopes, Daniel (papa’s Daniel Daniel) Lopes, Mason (papa’s Mai Mai) Lopes, Madison (papa’s Booma Booma) Lopes, Lalah (papa’s Lalah Lalah) Nkomo, Logan (papa’s Loggie Loggie) Lopes, Morgan Beltre, Zeus Beltre, Marcus Mitchell, Michael Mitchell and Nichole Townsend, one great grandchild, Giselle Machado and two special nieces, Misty G. Delgado and her daughter Mahogany Braxton and Alisha A. Rose and her sons Jermaine and Andrey Rose. He was the father of the late Daniel Lopes.
His funeral will be held on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 9:00 AM from the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Holy Name Church, Camp Street, Providence. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours Thursday 4-8.
