Donald B. McLean,86, of Riverside, passed away on Monday September 29, 2014, surrounded by his devoted family. He was the husband of L. Diana( Daubney) McLean, son of the late Harry and Gladys McLean, father of Bruce McLean, Gregory McLean and his wife Monica, grandfather of James and Scott McLean, brother of Harry McLean Jr. and the late June McLean Anderson.Donald achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant in the US Marine Corps while serving from 1947 through 1956. Upon being honorably discharged, Donald returned to Riverside and although he was a respected insurance agent and broker for more than 50 years, his passion was music. He started as a teenager playing professionally with The Quarry Heights Quintet, continued with the Marine Corp Band and numerous other bands. Eventually he became the band leader of various groups including Red Archer and his Bowmen and more recently The Jazz Strollers.He was a Master Mason of St. Andrews Lodge, No. 39 and the Sword of Bunker Hill, an officer of the Providence Federation of Musicians, a board member of the East Providence Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the EPHS Class of 1944 Reunion, a founding member and officer for the Silver Spring Golf Association, and contributed to various city committees.His calling hours will be held on Friday from 5-8 PM in the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
