Carroll M. “TAD” McLoughlin

McLOUGHLIN, CARROLL M. “TAD”, 88, of Clarke Road, Barrington, died Wednesday June 3, 2015.  He was the husband of the late Elizabeth “Lib” Olney McLoughlin.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, a son of the late Thomas James and Mary Jones McLoughlin, he later lived in Barrington for much of his life.  He was the brother of the late Thomas J. McLoughlin, Jr.

A 1944 graduate of Duquesne High School in PA, he also attended Culver Military Academy in northern Indiana during summers.  Tad graduated from Colgate University in 1949 with a BA in Economics.  He was a 3-time letter winner as quarterback of the Colgate Raiders football team and was a Delta Upsilon fraternity member.  He was a member of Konosioni, Colgate’s senior honor society recognizing outstanding leadership, service to the community, and preservation of tradition.  Tad interrupted his college education to serve as a Corpsman and Pharmacist’s Mate in the United States Navy during WWII.

Tad went on to a successful career in the textile industry, working for many years as an executive in DuPont’s Textile division during its innovation of synthetic fibers.  He subsequently finished his career as co-owner of Barrington Yarns, Inc., a textile yarn brokerage.  He was a long standing member of the Southern New England Textile Association and New England Yarn Peddlers Association.  Tad was also a Mason.

Tad was a devoted father who was active in the Barrington community as a Little League baseball coach, a Vestryman at St John’s Episcopal Church, and a member of Rhode Island Country Club for 55 years.  Golf was a favorite activity of Tad’s, and he and Lib truly enjoyed their time on the course with family and friends.

For the last two years of his life, Tad was a member of the Tockwotton on the Waterfront community in East Providence, where he was a popular resident in The Courtyard Memory Care Program.  Always the gentleman, his kind personality and genuine welcoming smile touched the hearts of all he met.  Tad will be dearly missed by so many.

He leaves a daughter, Christine M. Brinkman of Warren and her companion, Paul G. Furtado; a son, Thomas O. McLoughlin and his wife Tammie of Powell, Ohio; three grandchildren, Sean T., Ryan O., and Rachel P. McLoughlin; and a former son-in-law, Victor Brinkman.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, County Road in Barrington.  Burial with military honors immediately following in Prince’s Hill Cemetery, Barrington.  Calling hours will be held at PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence on Wednesday 4-8 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to The Alzheimer’s Association, 245 Waterman Street, Providence, R.I. 02906 or to The Courtyard Memory Care at Tockwotton on the Waterfront, 500 Waterfront Drive, East Providence, R.I. 02914 would be greatly appreciated.
