Arthur Joseph Tolda 90, of Bay Spring Avenue and formerly of East Providence, died Friday August 30, 2013 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. He was the husband of the late Pearl M. (Jackman) Tolda. Born in East Providence he was a son of the late Fausto D. and Maria (Leite-Barbosa) Tolda. Mr. Tolda was a beck hand attendant for Marine Aviation in New York for 18 years before retiring in 1977. Arthur served in the Navy from March, 1942 to December, 1945. He was assigned to the USS Biscayne, sailing to Greenland, then North Africa. In 1943, the USS Biscayne saw action in the invasion at Licata, Sicily, Salerno and Anzio in 1944 and southern France. Then in 1945 he participated in the battles at Iwo Jima, Kerama Retto and Okinawa. He leaves one son, Arthur J. Tolda Jr. of North Carolina, one brother, Massamino Tolda of Riverside, California and two grandchildren, Cory Ellen Tolda and Robert Michael Tolda. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM from the PERRY-MCSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Martha’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours Monday 5-8.
